The verse are from the medieval saga of Víglundur and Ketilríður. It’s a romantic saga that takes place in the western part of Iceland. Víglundur presents Ketilríður, his fiancee, with these verses before he goes off to Norway where he stays for a few years. In his absence Ketilríður is given to another man to marry. When Víglundur returns home to Iceland he happens to come to the farm where Ketilríður lives with her husband to be, and stays there for the winter. They stay there under one roof the whole winter in deep agony and totally heart-broken. But when Ketilríður
is supposed to marry the next spring, her husband to be reveals that he is a distant relative of Víglundur and had asked for the hand of Ketilríður only to guard her while Víglundur was abroad. Víglundur marries Ketilríður and they live happily ever after.

The verse are in skaldic meter that used to be the most prestigious meter in the medieval period and it was considered a great gift to be able to make poetry in that meter. In Icelandic medieval literature there are many stories of Icelandic poets composing skaldic poetry praising foreign kings and receiving great gifts and fame when they recited the poetry to said kings.
The tune is a variant of a song that may be considered one of the oldest Icelandic folk tunes. Bjarni Þorsteinsson collected many variants of the tune, one of which has been used to sing the childhood poetry of Egill Skallagrímsson the hero of the epynomus saga.
