This is a folk song that was first published in an arrangement by composer Sigfús Einarsson (1877–1939) in Skírnir, the journal of the Icelandic literary society, in 1913.
The verse is from a folk tale – a ghost story. It’s a story of a girl that gives birth to a baby clandestinely and exposes it wrapped in a piece of rag. Later the girl sits in a den milking sheep with another girl and they are discussing if they should go to a dance that was supposed to be soon, and she says she might not go be- cause she has nothing to wear. Then the voice of the exposed child of hers – the útburður – is heard chanting:
