about

This poetry is by Jónas Hallgrímsson (1807–1845) who is considered one of the greatest Icelandic poets. It’s a little play or a short story that Jónas wrote in a letter to his friend and tells of a housemaid that had frost-bitten toes and the speaker is consoling her in her pain and agony. The consolation quickly turns ironic as every verse concludes with the assertion that she will receive gold for every toe that Grímur the healer will have to remove from her feet, first one, then more than one
and finally all of them. Grímur Magnússon (1761–1836) was a famous healer in the northern part of Iceland where Jónas grew up and Jónas probably knew that he had removed many a frostbitten toe.

The song was published in the folk music collection of composer Sveinbjörn Svein- björnsson (1847–1927) in 1923.

lyrics

Don’t you cry dear,
hear my words.
I’ll give you gold
for the toe Grímur will remove.

Don’t you cry dear,
for consolation know
that I’ll give you gold
for another toe Grímur might remove.
Don’t you cry dear,
find solace in the fact that
I’ll give you gold
for your toes when Grímur removes
them all.

Today Ylja performs as a duet and with various session players depending on the occasion.
