The song is an Irish folk song that became a national favourite in Iceland when playwright Jónas Árnason (1923–1998) used it in his ’70 play Þið munið hann Jörund (e. You remember Jörundur) about the few weeks “reign” of the Dane Jørgen Jørgensen who declared himself king of Iceland in 1809. In the play it’s a lullaby that Vala sings to her child.
